About Me
I’m Julia Freer (formerly Julia Goldstein) — a materials geek, business owner, published author, and lifelong teacher who’s spent my career bridging the worlds of engineering and marketing. My background spans engineering, journalism, content writing, and teaching — an unusual combination that informs everything I do.
I’ve been fascinated by materials like metals and plastics ever since I took Intro to Materials Science in college. A hands-on failure analysis course inspired me to pursue an advanced degree in materials science. My PhD research on lead-free solders naturally led to a role as a process development engineer in the electronics industry.
Over the next few decades, my career took many twists and turns — much of which I share in a chapter of Empowering Women in STEM: Pioneering Paths to Shape the Future.
I’ve lived in the Seattle area since 2014, where I enjoy a beautiful view of trees from my home office. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me playing flute and piccolo in a community concert band or training for sprint-distance triathlons.
